DescriptionOscuro is a conceptual conference reframing and celebrating women in the art world and museum spaces. Our mission is to create an open conversation on how we can combat the inequities and barriers that women face in art creation + curation.

The conference name, Oscuro, is derived from the Italian word chiaroscuro, an art term used to describe the use of strong contrasts between light and dark. Oscuro, meaning “dark and obscure” speaks to how the conference brings women, who have been historically marginalized in the art world, into the light.

THE “FRAME”

Each image is curated around the idea of a “frame” — a visual representation of how we are working to reframe women in art creation and curation. 

Through the use of our variable logo, we explored three modes to illustrate the idea of breaking out of a frame; artworks are shown breaking out of a framing letterform, breaking out of poster containers, or finally shown in full bleed as different parts of the artwork are framed by overlaid type.

THE ARTISTS & ARTWORK

We featured a wide range of work created by women artists. All the works we chose feature female subjects, to reclaim and empower women in art. We chose colorful imagery to be highlighted in our black and white color palette. Throughout our brand applications, attributions are included with the artworks.
